VCAT is often left carrying the can for difficult decisions that some would rather duck. Rather, the system we have is inherently subjective VCAT is often placed in the difficult position of overruling populist decisions made (or avoided) at the local level that are open to interpretation because of overly vague policy made at state level. The series created the impression that VCAT gets things wrong more than it gets it right.

While the series by Swinburne media students should have assisted the community understand the role of VCAT and planning, the Planning Institute of Australia feels that instead the articles have led to further confusion over VCAT's role and a disjointed explanation of the planning system.
